Cork is home to some great colleges that offer career-enhancing courses. Freshers’ week is a rite of passage, and you’ll find that the first month of college is packed full of events that are designed to help you settle in and meet new people. Whether it’s late-night events or daytime bonding sessions, your first few weeks will be an immersive experience – and you really should make the most of it.
Whether you’re studying at University College Cork or the Institute of Technology, you’ll be spoiled for choice with the events on offer. The September Freshers’ week is a time to meet your new coursemates, your new flatmates, and your new college-mates, and here are the events where it will happen.
Monday 17th September
Jack Wise – 1pm
In the student centre of the Technology Institute, you can kick things off with a bit of lighthearted entertainment. Magician, ventriloquist, and sword-swallower Jack Wise will be providing the entertainment.
Keep It Local – 9pm
There will be a student-only event in The Bishopstown Bar to kick off the first evening of activities. Entry costs €2 before 10pm and €5 after, and your ticket includes a free bus back to your accommodation. Don’t forget to bring your student ID to get in!
Tuesday 18th September
Freshers Tuesday – 11pm
Tuesday is the official student night in Cork, and Cyprus Avenue on Caroline Street is the place to be. Doors open at 11pm, entry is €5, and the resident DJs will be taking you through until 2am. Again, don’t forget to bring your student ID along to make sure you get in.
Wednesday 19th September
Freshers Wednesday – 9pm
If you’ve still got energy left after Freshers Tuesday, the next event can be found in Suas Rooftop Bar. This is one of Cork’s hidden gems, with live music and loads of drinks to choose from, not to mention one of the best outdoor areas in the city.
Thursday 20th September
Barry Jones – 1pm
If you can manage to get out of bed for 1 in the afternoon, you’ll find Barry Jones in the student centre. Be warned, because Barry is a world-famous hypnotist with loads of TV appearances under his belt.
Freshers’ Ball – 11pm
Back to Cyprus Avenue for the final freshers’ event of the week, where world-famous DJ Mark McCabe will be playing tunes like “Nervous” and “I’m Feeling It” until the early hours. Admission to this event costs €15, and you’ll need your student ID to get in.
